19th of April: the Indians' Day / 19 de abril: Dia do Índio

19th of April, the Indian's Day, was created in 1943 to remind us when many Indian leaders of the Continent, in 1940, decided to take part in the First Inter-American Indian Congress that took place in Mexico. They boycotted the first days of the meeting because they thought that their claims wouldn’t be heard by “white men”. During the congress it was created the Inter-American Indian Institute, also settled in Mexico, which has the function of taking care of the Indians’ rights in America. Brazil didn’t adhere to the institute immediately, but after Marshal Rondon intervention, the Brazilian government joined the resolution and created the Indian's Day. Below some photos of Brazilian Indians.

Thanks Nothingprofound!!!
You know, I'm really lucky in living in a colorful country and city because I love colors in general! I think that I couldn't stand living in a "foggy" and grey place. I'm not talking about the weather only, but also about the nature, the people, the food, and the humour!

Super fantastic photos of Brazilian Indian, young and old...
They made me remember the following:
A long time ago, I saw a documentary about Brazilian Indians of the Amazon region on a long distance flight. I never forgot their world of jungle, birds, piranhas, their carefree life with bows and arrows, their paradise. However, it must be rare to encounter such tribes now.

Hi Gabriele, nice to see you here again! Thanks for visiting and commenting.
Yes, the photos above are really nice and you know, nowadays the Brazilian Indians have been conquering more and more rights and lands, that in fact belong to them! And this is great, because they are our roots and we have to preserve their tribes, costumes and traditions withou trying to acculturate them. On the contrary, we have much to learn from them!

Hi Vania,
I had never really thought about the Indian communities in South America before, guess I just knew about those in the US -glad to see that there contribution and culture is rightly being recognised and celebrated in this way!

Hi Paul! Thanks for visiting my blog again!
You know, I really like different traditions, folklore, cultures, because they take part in our DNA, and because of this must be respected and preserved. And this diversity generates a marvellous myriad that should be transmitted from one generation to another. Many years before us, the Indians were the lands' owners, so, why we insist in trying to acculturate them or take them out of their land, by force? Everyday should be the Indian's Day!

Hi Vania,
it's been a long time that I haven't been in touch. I also traveled and then, I couldn't publish anything in blogspot any more for some reason. I've just traced your website in my smartphone with those great photos that you could take from high up. (The friend who fixes antennas). Your web looks stunning, by the way. Great information...
Vania, may I ask a favor,please?
Can you delete my comment, as I didn't leave the link as a no follow and that and others in blogspot got me into big Penguin trouble? Thank you my dear for all your trouble. My comment is by Gabiele. Hey, and perhaps we can join circles in Google Plus. Are you connected there?

Hi Vania,

Great post! I wonder if you might be able to point me to where you found the information about Indian leaders not attending the first day of the Indian Congress. I would really like to learn more about it!!
